Train Station (Train Murals – Part 2)

train station mural

To me, it just screamed “Train Station.” As I toured the church building for the first time, still under construction, I knew immediately what I could do.  They had already asked me to paint a train in the Kid’s Ministry area and call it “The Grace Express,” but the thing that first struck me was the wall of brick…and the fact it was leading up to a wall with a hole for a window.  Knowing this is where parents would be checking in their kids on Sunday mornings, it was the ideal location for a train station.  Named after the church, we’re calling it “New Foundation Station.” Continue Reading →

I’ve Been Workin’ on the Railroad (Train Murals – Part 1)

When I was a kid, I remember singing, “I’ve Been Workin’ on the Railroad…all the live long day.”  I hadn’t thought about that song in years!  Until recently, when I really was working on a railroad for days on end, as I painted Train Murals for my church’s Kid’s Ministry.  After years of worshiping in a school gym, we’ve moved into our own building, and I was asked if I could paint a mural or two to make the children feel as if they’re going on a journey aboard “The Grace Express.”  Well, fire up the locomotive and say no more!  I spent six and a half weeks getting completely carried away with trains, a train station, railroad tracks on the floors, props, etc.  There’s so much, I decided to take you on a video tour before breaking it down into individual blog entries.  All aboard!

After seeing this video, be sure to see how these train murals came together, beginning with the Train Station.

Front Door Makeover

Desktop2

One thing always seems to lead to another with me, and that was certainly the case with this Front Door Makeover.  Believe it or not, it started when I decided to dust the ceiling fan in my living room.  I pulled out my 8-foot ladder to reach it, and while I was up there wiping the blades I thought, “So long as I have the ladder out, I might as well dust the ledge near the front door.”  I took everything off and was dusting away.  I even took down a fake plant and gave it a good rinse in the bathtub.  But then…when I got back up on the ladder, my front door was staring me right in the face.  I was reminded of how, from the day we moved into this house, I’ve never liked it.  It just screamed 1990’s and was so ready for an update.  So, I stepped off the ladder, got my electric sander, and started going to town on the door while it was still hanging!  It was right about then that my teenage daughter got home from school. Nautical Nursery

side view 1

You’ll have to pardon the pun, but it really was smooth sailing working on this Nautical Nursery.  I love it when murals come together easily, and what made this job even more enjoyable was the fact I painted it for a former co-worker and his lovely wife.  They’re expecting their first baby any day now, and what can I say?  He works in TV, so that should explain why he called me so close to deadline! Bedroom Makeover (Part 1)

photo 5

What started out as a small project, has now turned into a full-fledged Bedroom Makeover.  I’m talking painting walls, painting furniture, upholstering a headboard, adding feet to a captain’s bed, and the list goes on.  How did it happen?  The same way all my projects do.  I change one thing, and before I know it, it leads to another…and another.  And this time, I’m dealing with my teenage daughter, who changes her mind almost as often as she changes outfits.

Kitchen Makeover (Part 4)

photo 2 copy 4

I had entirely too much fun with this Kitchen Makeover!  It’s impossible not to when you love who you’re working with.  These homeowners not only have a young, hip sense of style…they are some of the sweetest people I know; devoted teachers (one of them was even voted Teacher of the Year last school year!), and foster parents, whose whole reason for the makeover was to accommodate foster children in their home.  Just knowing I could help with that, even in a small way, warms my heart.

Kitchen Makeover (Part 3)

Primed and ready to go… When you last checked in on this Kitchen Makeover, the chalkboard paint was up and I was preparing the cabinets for painting.  All the doors and drawers were sanded and primed, as were the cabinet fronts themselves.  I loved the idea of a Robbin’s Egg blue for the cabinets, but the homeowner, who was already missing her bold green wall, wanted her favorite color back in.  So I suggested a more toned down shade of green; one that I knew would still suit her artsy and fun style, but work with the design of the kitchen.

Kitchen Makeover (Part 2)

If you read my last post, you’re probably dying to find out what the homeowners decided to do for their budget friendly Kitchen Makeover.  Okay… so maybe it’s really just ME who is dying with excitement.  But that’s because they agreed to have their kitchen cabinets painted, and turn the entire back wall into a giant chalkboard!!!  I was really, REALLY hoping they would like that idea as much as I did.
