Headboard Makeover: Drapery Rod Finials Give Bedposts a Boost

If your headboard needs a makeover, here’s an idea:  Use Drapery Rod Finials to Give Bedposts a Boost.  It certainly worked in this case, turning a generic picket fence headboard into something a little more upscale.  These days, drapery rod finials come in so many shapes and sizes.  You just have to think outside the box.  You can add them to all sorts of things, paint over them, and be amazed by how they add instant style.

These particular finials came from Hobby Lobby, and they would have looked great as-is.  But since the headboard and footboard needed a new paint job anyway, I went ahead and painted the finials.  Let me show you what the bed looked like Before:

photo 2Once again, my savvy shopping friend found this at a garage sale for a song and she needed it for her sweet baby girl who is ready to make the transition from crib to big girl bed.  This wasn’t exactly what my friend had in mind, but the price was right.  And with a little sanding to remove the minor nicks & scratches, and a fresh coat of paint, she knew she could grow to love it.

Once everything was sanded, I measured to find the exact center of the bedposts and marked it with a pencil.  Then, using a drill, I drilled a pilot hole directly into the center.  I was then able to screw in the finials nice and tight.

With everything in place, it was time to paint and take this bed from stark white to Antique White.  (This color is from Valspar in semi-gloss.)  I used my paint sprayer, since there are so many posts I’d have to work around, and I was done in no time.

When the paint was dry, I then rubbed on a clear protective finish (Annie Sloan’s Soft Wax) using an old, but clean, cotton T-shirt.  Then I called this project DONE.
