Front Door Makeover

Desktop2

One thing always seems to lead to another with me, and that was certainly the case with this Front Door Makeover.  Believe it or not, it started when I decided to dust the ceiling fan in my living room.  I pulled out my 8-foot ladder to reach it, and while I was up there wiping the blades I thought, “So long as I have the ladder out, I might as well dust the ledge near the front door.”  I took everything off and was dusting away.  I even took down a fake plant and gave it a good rinse in the bathtub.  But then…when I got back up on the ladder, my front door was staring me right in the face.  I was reminded of how, from the day we moved into this house, I’ve never liked it.  It just screamed 1990’s and was so ready for an update.  So, I stepped off the ladder, got my electric sander, and started going to town on the door while it was still hanging!  It was right about then that my teenage daughter got home from school. Nautical Nursery

side view 1

You’ll have to pardon the pun, but it really was smooth sailing working on this Nautical Nursery.  I love it when murals come together easily, and what made this job even more enjoyable was the fact I painted it for a former co-worker and his lovely wife.  They’re expecting their first baby any day now, and what can I say?  He works in TV, so that should explain why he called me so close to deadline! On A Personal Note… Thank You, Lord!!!

I had big plans to finish the year strong, as far as my blog was concerned.  The holidays always provide lots of opportunity for crafting and painting projects, and, believe me, I had my share!  But something happened December 6th that put those plans on hold and, very literally, brought me to my knees.  My sister called to tell me my father had collapsed and was being rushed to the hospital.  I knew from her voice, it was serious enough for me to get on a plane and head home to New Mexico.  Truth be told, we almost lost him, were it not for the fact I come from a family of faith and God answered our prayers. Painted Bus

DSC_0157

Every year, Christmas seems to get here earlier and earlier, and for me that means a countdown to rolling out the Painted Bus.   This bus belongs to my church and is used to shuttle children back and forth to Sunday school.  But come Christmastime, it gets painted up, and used on Saturdays too, as we park it outside local stores and collect toys for the children of Luke Air Force Base.  It’s a small gesture that goes a long way in honoring the families of our military heroes.

Bedroom Makeover (Part 4): Hand Painted Dresser

DSC_0053

So far in this Bedroom Makeover, we’ve turned a twin captain’s bed into a stylish day bed, and we’ve made our own upholstered headboard.  Now comes my favorite project in this makeover:  A Hand Painted Dresser.   It’s painted to combine my daughter’s love of all things vintage…and more importantly to capture her passion for music.  And, I have to say, I am positively in love with how it turned out.

Bedroom Makeover (Part 3): Up-cycled Bed

DSC_0077

Work with what you have…. for this Bedroom Makeover, that was pretty much my mantra.  Rather than buy a new daybed, which is what my teenage daughter wanted, I worked with her existing captain’s bed, hoping to turn it into a one-of-a-kind, ultra stylish, not recycled, but Up-cycled Bed.

Bedroom Makeover (Part 2): Upholstered Headboard

headboard1

This Bedroom Makeover for my 15-year old daughter started off with no real direction…just a bunch of mis-matched ideas that kept changing from one moment to the next.  So before painting or buying new bedding, we decided to focus on the bed itself.  It is, after all, the focal point of every bedroom.  My daughter wanted a day bed, but I knew we could work with what she already had.  Her captain’s bed could easily be turned on it’s side.  The only thing missing?  A headboard.  And, boom, just like that we had our starting point.  Here’s how we made an Upholstered Headboard.
