Buenos Tardis: Doctor Who Goes Mexican

2015-05-09 17.56.06

Buenos Tardis, everyone…. That’s what you get when Doctor Who goes Mexican.   Talk about an odd pairing!  But it’s been a long school year, and somehow, I needed to combine the theme for this year’s Marching Band season (Doctor Who) with the mexican buffet that was being served at the end-of-the-school-year Band Banquet.  If I haven’t mentioned this before, I’m what you call a “band parent.”  That means, when my daughter is out marching on the field during half-time at her High School football games, I’m selling hotdogs and hamburgers in the concession stand.  And when the band is competing at various invitationals, I’m chaperoning and helping in any way possible.  This year, we “band parents” got to lug around a giant tardis…and I didn’t even know what a tardis was!  You have to be familiar with the British science fiction series, Doctor Who, to know that it’s a time machine in the form of a police telephone box. What Ever Became of It?

Sometimes I can’t help but wonder, “What Ever Became of It?”  As a painter and Do-It-Yourselfer, I’ll pour my heart into a particular project, and once done, never see it again.  It doesn’t bother me.  But it sure is nice sometimes, when people send me pictures of a canvas I painted, or a piece of furniture I redid, and I get to see how it’s being put to use in daily life.  That was certainly the case with the picture you see above.  I worked on both the rocking horse and the rocking chair well before that sweet little blue-eyed girl was born.  And to have a photo of her using them absolutely melts my heart. Repurposed Nightstand

A Repurposed Nightstand is now ready for playtime as a child’s kitchenette.  It’s one of my favorite projects to date. Learn how to transform an old piece of furniture, that is unwanted and unused, into a one-of-a-kind family keepsake.  For this video tutorial, I use items found entirely at thrift stores. I use craft paints, used hardware, and even a thrift store pillowcase to achieve a darling kitchenette.  Get ready to get cookin’ with this Repurposed Nightstand!

DIY Wooden Sign

IMG_4528

Some projects just seem more meaningful than others…and that was the case with this DIY Wooden Sign celebrating adoption.  It was needed for a planned photo shoot.  And, I must say, when I saw the pictures, my heart positively melted.  Of course, you can make this sign say whatever you want, in the color of your choice.  This tutorial merely shows you what I used to achieve this sort of distressed, rustic look.  Continue Reading →

DIY Wedding Decor

2blog

This DIY Wedding Decor was made for a shabby chic garden wedding.  It adds a uniquely elegant flare, without breaking the bank.  All it takes is thrift store frames, some scrap wood, and paint.  (Although, in this case, thanks to a friend of mine who has a Cricut cutter, I used vinyl letters instead of hand painting them, making it that much nicer…and easier!)  Here’s a quick tutorial:

Painted Bus

DSC_0157

Every year, Christmas seems to get here earlier and earlier, and for me that means a countdown to rolling out the Painted Bus.   This bus belongs to my church and is used to shuttle children back and forth to Sunday school.  But come Christmastime, it gets painted up, and used on Saturdays too, as we park it outside local stores and collect toys for the children of Luke Air Force Base.  It’s a small gesture that goes a long way in honoring the families of our military heroes.
