Mason Jar Motif

Mason Jar MotifMy kitchen is now sporting a Mason Jar Motif.   It’s what happens when I spend a little too much time on Pinterest. It’s like crack for creative people.  One minute you’re looking at beautiful pictures online… the next you’re driving through dark alleyways in search of weathered wood, and you’re buying mason jars by the case.  But just look what I have to show for it!  Continue Reading →

What Ever Became of It?

Sometimes I can’t help but wonder, “What Ever Became of It?”  As a painter and Do-It-Yourselfer, I’ll pour my heart into a particular project, and once done, never see it again.  It doesn’t bother me.  But it sure is nice sometimes, when people send me pictures of a canvas I painted, or a piece of furniture I redid, and I get to see how it’s being put to use in daily life.  That was certainly the case with the picture you see above.  I worked on both the rocking horse and the rocking chair well before that sweet little blue-eyed girl was born.  And to have a photo of her using them absolutely melts my heart. I Think I Can, I Think I Can (Train Murals – Part 3)

painting

“I Think I Can, I Think I Can” pretty much sums up how I was feeling as I continued to pick up steam…and inspiration, for more train murals.  At this point, I had just finished painting a train station in the entry way of the Kid’s Ministry area at my church, when someone handed me a stack of books.  He was a serious railway buff and thought I wouldn’t mind seeing some of the stuff he had.  Wow!  It was exactly what I needed to get me going!  Even though my murals were cartoon style, I sketched out a train from one of the book covers and painted my first train in the Preschool classroom.  It was an older looking train with lots of character.  Keeping with our theme, I called it “The Grace Express.” Continue Reading →

Train Station (Train Murals – Part 2)

train station mural

To me, it just screamed “Train Station.” As I toured the church building for the first time, still under construction, I knew immediately what I could do.  They had already asked me to paint a train in the Kid’s Ministry area and call it “The Grace Express,” but the thing that first struck me was the wall of brick…and the fact it was leading up to a wall with a hole for a window.  Knowing this is where parents would be checking in their kids on Sunday mornings, it was the ideal location for a train station.  Named after the church, we’re calling it “New Foundation Station.” Continue Reading →

On A Personal Note… Thank You, Lord!!!

I had big plans to finish the year strong, as far as my blog was concerned.  The holidays always provide lots of opportunity for crafting and painting projects, and, believe me, I had my share!  But something happened December 6th that put those plans on hold and, very literally, brought me to my knees.  My sister called to tell me my father had collapsed and was being rushed to the hospital.  I knew from her voice, it was serious enough for me to get on a plane and head home to New Mexico.  Truth be told, we almost lost him, were it not for the fact I come from a family of faith and God answered our prayers. Boys Dresser

DSC_0012

No matter how long I’ve been doing this, I still seem to learn from every project…and in the case of this Boys Dresser, I actually learned two things:  One, sometimes I picture things way differently in my mind.  And, Two, you should really read directions.  You’ll see what I mean as you continue reading on.  For now, let me take you back to the beginning, when this cute and colorful dresser was plain white.

Creative Classrooms

R370It’s Back-to-school time, and you’ve really gotta hand it to teachers who go the extra mile to set up creative classrooms with colorful bulletin boards and all kinds of artwork.  Using the most basic of supplies — usually just colored paper, scissors and a stapler — their efforts welcome and inspire students who will be spending much of their foreseeable future staring at those walls.

Inspiration

DSC_0521

Sometimes it’s good to get out of town, not just for a change of scenery, but for inspiration.  That’s exactly what my husband and I did this past week while my daughter was off at Music Camp.  We traveled to one of my favorite places in the world:  Taos, New Mexico.
